It’s Father’s Day on 18 June which is this Sunday – it’s rather snuck up on me. My husband is not a massive fan of possessions – and as we are trying to reduce things in our house – that’s fine with me. We always try and find activities or experiences to celebrate. London has a lot to offer – here are some events which you might find tick the last minute and non possession box!
A day trip to London definitely trumps a card and some beers. There’s always something on in London – the only taxing thing can be deciding what you should do… here’s some ideas:
Attend an Event
If your dad fancies himself as the master chef of the house, the Taste of London will be returning to Regent’s Park from the 14th-18th of June, offering attendees a wide range of demonstrations and masterclasses.
Or if your dad is particularly taken aback by London’s magnificent architecture, London’s Festival of Architecture is worth a visit and will be running until the end of June.
The concept of escape rooms has been seen on various TV shows over the years, but its rise in popularity as a leisure activity has been a more recent development. An escape room is exactly what it sounds like: a place that, by solving puzzles, finding keys and working out clues, a group of people will try to escape from.
London has a variety of escape rooms to choose from, each offering a particular theme with brilliantly engaging tasks. An escape room is a great way for your family to bond, communicate and work together as a team. The intensity of a time limit makes the whole experience more exciting and will definitely create some memorable moments.
My colleagues did this as a reward for winning a team challenge and they all were buzzing about how fun this was.
Not one for me, but I’ve friends who’ve done this for birthday parties and found it amazing. With expertly designed battlefields paintballing provides a sense of excitement that’s difficult to compare to and impossible to rival. Whether you want to play against each other or as a team, paintball on Father’s Day will be hilarious and memorable, to say the least.
To experience the best outdoor paintball London has to offer, you won’t have to travel far from the inner city. Doing so will get you away from the hustle and bustle of the capital and into more rural surroundings to battle it out. You should also look online for paintballing vouchers to see if you can get a bargain; even if they’re not paying for it, your dad will appreciate the money-saving ethic.
Another huge bonus of outdoor paintball is that it can be played in all weather conditions. So if the UK’s wonderfully unpredictable weather decides to take a turn for the worse, you can still take to the battlefield. Muddy conditions may even improve the war-style aesthetic.
A Speedboat Ride
While a leisurely jaunt along the River Thames sounds like a pleasant way to take in the sights, it surely doesn’t compare to the excitement of gliding over the water on a speedboat. If your dad is particularly fond of boats, or just would prefer to see the sights along the riverbank at a faster pace, you can’t go wrong with a speedboat ride.
Up at The O2
Since it opened in 2007, the O2 Arena has done nothing but great things for London as a city, including being one of the main venues for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The arena as huge, impossible to miss and a brilliant addition to London’s modern architecture.
We loved our visit back in the summer and definitely wondered what the view would be like from the top. I recently discovered that the O2 Arena is one of the rarities that not only allows you to take in the view, but also experience the adrenaline rush of scaling the arena. As you can imagine, Up at The O2 is a popular activity, so booking in advance and checking the seasonal opening times would be best.
Father’s Day is often one of those occasions that comes and goes without much being said or done. This year, take a trip to London (or if you already live there, great!) and take advantage of the exciting activities it has to offer. Whether you battle it out with your dad in outdoor paintball or put your heads together to defeat an escape room, London has plenty going on that’s perfect for Father’s Day celebrations.
